The Harvard Summer School study-abroad program in Greece returned in 2023 for its 20th iteration, with the administrative and logistical support of CHS Greece. From June 24 to July 30, this intensive five-week academic course began in Thessaloniki where it spent its first two weeks and traveled to Nafplio for the remainder of time. Participants also had the opportunity of intermediate short stays in Olympia, Delphi, and Athens, along with additional day trips to sights and museums.

The 20th iteration of the Harvard Summer School in Greece welcomed 11 Harvard undergraduates, 2 University of Patras students on scholarships by CHS and their home university, and 1 Fudan University student on an additional CHS scholarship. Two researchers from Greek universities also joined the program for one week each, as part of their CHS Fellowships in Comparative Cultural Studies: Eleni Fassa, Assistant Professor at the Department of History and Ethnology of the Democritus University of Thrace, and Konstantinos Vlasopoulos, Associate Professor at the Department of History and Archaeology of the University of Crete.

The Harvard Summer School In Greece program’s academic scope centers around the theme of "Migration and Boundaries—Reconceptualizing Mobility in the Eastern Mediterranean and Beyond" which in 2023 was explored through eight interrelated seminars by Harvard and Harvard-affiliated faculty.

Excursions and cultural outings were scheduled to complement the research-driven classes and the students’ experience of living in Greece. Some of the additional cultural activities for the cohort of summer 2023 included:

  • a performance by the famous mezzo-soprano Alexandra Gravas at the Thessaloniki Concert Hall
  • attending an innovative theatrical adaptation of ‘The Frogs’ by Aristophanes in the ancient theater of Epidaurus
  • a screening of the film “Smyrna, my beloved” in the presence of its creator, Mimi Denissi.

As always, words fall short of describing the unparalleled experience of the Harvard Summer School Program in Greece. For this reason, we welcome you to watch the following video with glimpses of the 2023 program's participants and activities, made by Sidnee Klein, one of this year’s students.

You can also have a look at this year's Harvard Summer School in Greece pictures below as well as on the CHS Greece social media with pictures from this and past iterations of the program.

We wish to extend our thanks and appreciation to all participants and team members of the Harvard Summer School program in Greece. Everyone’s contribution has marked another successful iteration this summer which we hope will stay in their loving memories; as it has for our part and is gearing us now during the preparations for next year which are well underway.
