About the event

Overview

The Argolis Association of Philologists and CHS Greece hold an event entitled "Modern Greek History: Gunnar Hering's perspective." The invited speakers will be Anastasia Papadia-Lala who will give a talk on the topic "Gunnar Hering. An ecumenical thinker in the world of Modern Greek History: aspects of research and education,"  Maria A. Stassinopoulou on the topic "CV and the autobiographical process," Vangelis Karamanolakis on "Gunnar Hering: from historian to citizen," and Agathoklis Azelis on "Gunnar Hering as a university teacher."

The event will be moderated by Olga Katsiardi-Hering, who will close the event with a short talk on "Gunnar Hering, Notes on Balkan and Modern Greek History and Life."

Short biographical note of Gunnar Hering

Gunnar Hering (1934-1994) studied Philosophy, History and Balkan Studies at the Universities of Berlin, Thessaloniki and Vienna. As an Assistant Professor at the University of Freiburg, Professor of History of Eastern and South-Eastern Europe at the University of Göttingen and Professor of Modern Greek Studies at the University of Vienna, he was instrumental in the upscale and creative development of the Institute of Byzantine and Modern Greek Studies in Vienna. He was proficient in more than ten languages and published studies on political, social, intellectual and ideological issues of modern Balkan and Greek history. His major works are Ökumenisches Patriarchat und europäische Politik (1620–1638), Wiesbaden 1968 (Greek ed. Οικουμενικό Πατριαρχείο και ευρωπαϊκή πολιτική, 1620-1638, Athens: ΜΙΕΤ, 1992), and Die Politischen Parteien in Griechenland 1821–1936, Munich 1992 (Greek ed. Τα πολιτικά κόμματα στην Ελλάδα, 2 volumes, Ahens: ΜΙΕΤ, 2006).
