Overview
The Center for Hellenic Studies in Greece and the Argolis Association of Philologists are co-organizing an event-tribute to C. Th. Dimaras on Friday, November 21, 2025, at 6 pm, at the CHS Greece building in Nafplio. The event, aiming to explore the significance of C. Th. Dimaras’s work and influence on the history of Greek education and Modern Greek literature, will include presentations that will address different aspects of his work, activities, and impact. The order of speakers and the topics of their presentations are as follows:
- Paschalis Kitromilides (Academy of Athens, University of Athens) will speak on the topic "C. Th. Dimaras and the Formation of the Field of Modern Greek Enlightenment Studies."
- Giannis Dimitrakakis (University of Crete) will speak on the topic "Modern Poetry in the History of Modern Greek Literature by C. Th. Dimaras: Terms, Interpretive Schemes, Critical Assessments."
- Georgia Gotsi (University of Patras) will speak on the topic "Persistent Romanticism: An Essay by C. Th. Dimaras."
- Panagiotis Kimourtzis (University of the Aegean) will speak on the topic "C. Th. Dimaras: The University in His Life and Work."
This initiative is part of the broader cooperation between the two organizations, aiming to promote the humanities and highlight significant figures of Greek literature.
Short biographical notes of the speakers
Georgia Gotsi
Georgia Gotsi is Professor of Modern Greek and Comparative Literature at the University of Patras. She has published four books, as well as critical articles and studies on nineteenth-, twentieth-, and twenty-first-century Greek literature and Greco-British relations. Recently, she edited the new annotated edition of “Η Λυγερή” (The Lissome Maiden) by Andreas Karkavitsas (Σύλλογος προς Διάδοσιν Ωφελίμων Βιβλίων [Society for the Promotion of Useful Books], 2025).
Giannis Dimitrakakis
Giannis Dimitrakakis was born in Athens in 1966 and is Associate Professor of Modern Greek Philology in the Department of Philology at the University of Crete. He has published studies on modern Greek prose, modern Greek criticism, as well as the reception of French literary works and critical concepts in Greece. His book “Διαδρομές της σκέψης του Κ. Θ. Δημαρά” (Paths of C. Th. Dimaras's Thought) (2025) is published by Sokolis Editions.
Panagiotis Kimourtzis
Panagiotis Kimourtzis is a professor at the University of the Aegean, where he teaches Modern History, History of Education, and Educational Policy. He has served as a visiting professor and researcher at institutions in France, the United Kingdom, and Italy. He is an elected member of the Executive Committee of the International Standing Conference for the History of Education (ISCHE).
Paschalis Kitromilides
Paschalis Kitromilides is Emeritus Professor of Political Science at the University of Athens. Since 1980, he has been the director of the Centre for Asia Minor Studies. He served as director of the Institute of Neohellenic Research at the National Hellenic Research Foundation (2000-2011) and has been a member of the Scientific Council of the Hellenic Parliament since 2004. Since 2020, he has been a full member of the Academy of Athens, holding the Chair in the History of Political Theories, as well as a member of the Cyprus Academy of Sciences, Letters and Arts.
