About the conference

Overview

The British School at Athens in collaboration with the Argolis Association of Philologists, and with the support of the Municipality of Nafplio and the Center for Hellenic Studies in Greece, Harvard University, are hosting a one-day conference on Saturday, February 10, 2024, at the Vouleutiko building in Nafplio. The conference aims to showcase recent research on the relationship between Philhellenism and the Greek Revolution of 1821.

The British School at Athens is orgazining the conference as part of its research project, "Unpublished archives of British Philhellenism during the Greek Revolution of 1821," undertaken in collaboration with the National Library of Greece (NLG) and generously supported by the Stavros Niarchos Foundation (SNF). The project has a three-year timeline (2021-24) with two objectives: firstly, it aims to establish a digital archive (The George Finlay Papers) with original documents from the papers of Scottish volunteer and historian George Finlay (1799-1875) and English captain Frank Abney Hastings (1794-1828), which are also an integral component of the BSA's George Finlay collection. Secondly, the project seeks to shed new light on the relationship between Philhellenism and the Greek Revolution of 1821 through various scholarly activities, such as conferences, blog posts, lectures, workshops, and the publication of studies on the subject, including an edited volume scheduled for release in the BSA's Modern Greek and Byzantine Studies series by Routledge. For additional details about the project and upcoming events, interested individuals can visit the British School of Athens website.

The Harvard University Center for Hellenic Studies in Greece and in the United States support activities on a diverse array of humanities studies, including those centered around the study of Greek culture. For its part, the Center is actively supporting this conference and is contributing by having two members from its academic community participate, who have previously engaged in research on the subject of Philhellenism and modern Greek history through the Center's programs.
