Overview
The Center for Hellenic Studies (CHS) offers residential postdoctoral fellowships in Hellenic Studies for the 2026-27 academic year. Fellows are appointed for a term of up to sixteen weeks in the fall (August 26, 2026, to December 16, 2026) or the spring (January 27, 2027, to May 19, 2027) or for a full academic year (August 26, 2026, to May 19, 2027). During this time, recipients are expected to be in residence at the CHS and to devote full time to their study projects. Fellowships include housing at the CHS, subsidized health insurance, a stipend (maximum of $25,000 for the sixteen-week term or $52,500 for the full year), adjusted for individual circumstances, and additional support (up to $1,500 for those in residence in only fall or spring and up to $3,000 for those awarded a full-year fellowship) for professional travel and research expenses. Additionally, the Center assists with travel expenses to and from Washington.
The purpose of the residential fellowship program is to encourage and support scholarship of the highest quality on topics related to ancient Greek civilization (e.g., archaeology, art history, epigraphy, history, literary criticism, philology, philosophy, pedagogical applications, reception, and interdisciplinary studies). The program aims to foster interaction among researchers from diverse backgrounds and regions of the world. Accordingly, the CHS welcomes projects with a traditional basis in Classics and those that adopt collaborative or interdisciplinary approaches to the field of Hellenic studies drawn from fields across the humanities, social sciences, and/or natural sciences.
For fellows conducting part of their research in Greece, the CHS Greece provides support on administrative, logistical, and other aspects of their project.
