Synopsis of the lecture:
This lecture concentrates on two areas: a) a discussion on the colloquial Greek language ("dimotiki") with a focus on leading representatives of the generation of the '30's (Seferis, Theotokas, Terzakis, Venizelos, et al.) with a view to holding a conference of writers leading to a "linguistic pact" accepted by all; b) the involvement and the role of linguist Manolis Triantafyllidis in this attempt, combined with the conditions that eventually allowed the writing of his Modern Greek Grammar and its integration into the educational system.
Short bio of the lecturer:
Christina Dounia, professor of Modern Greek Literature at the Department of Philology, National and Kapodistrian University of Athens, was educated at the same University. Her postgraduate studies were on History and Modern Greek Literature at the École des Hautes Études en Sciences Sociales and the Neohellenic Institute at the Sorbonne. In 1988 she obtained her PhD from the School of Philology of the Aristotle University of Thessaloniki. She has worked as a literary critic, while her studies and articles have been published in journals and collective volumes. She has published books on issues of history and of literature critique, comparative and Modern Greek literature. In 2000 she was awarded the State Prize for essay writing and in 2016 she was awarded the Prize of the Academy of Athens (Petros Haris Foundation).
