About the Symposium

Overview

Since 2012, Harvard's Center for Hellenic Studies in Washington DC, and in Greece, and the International Olympic Academy, have been co-organizing the International Scholars' Symposium on "Sports, Society, and Culture." The Symposium has hosted over 600 students from Greek Universities as participants and 60 faculty members as speakers and workshop moderators.

The topic of the 2023 Symposium is "Female Athletes, Women's Sport, and the Olympic Experience." Students and speakers will focus on the role of women in sports and the Olympics and its evolution from antiquity to the modern world.

This year's Symposium is organized by CHS Greece, CHS US, the IOA, and the Region of Western Greece and will be held between 11-14 of July at the state-of-the-art premises of the IOA in Olympia. As part of the international scholarly discourse on sports, society, and culture, participants will examine the cultural poetics of women's sport in classical antiquity and in the modern era. By analyzing the experience of female athletes within and without Olympic contexts, this year's Symposium brings to Olympia an academic gathering designed to shed new light on the dialogue between ancient and modern athletics.

Structure

In addition to lectures, the Symposium places emphasis on the blended learning approach. Morning presentations will be followed by afternoon workshops/breakout sessions during which the students will have the opportunity to discuss and reflect on the themes of the presentations in small groups. All participant students and faculty will also enjoy a guided tour to the unique archaeological site and museum of Ancient Olympia. The Symposium will conclude with a roundtable discussion, during which the outcomes of the presentations and the workshops will be presented, followed by the closing ceremony.
