Overview
The Institute of Historical Research (IHR) of the National Hellenic Research Foundation (NHRF) organizes the one-day conference "Instructional Methods in Context: Teaching, Learning and Crafting in the Eastern Mediterranean during the Late Middle-Ages (13th-15th Centuries)” which is hosted and supported by CHS Greece. This event will take place in Nafplio on October 9, 2025, and it is part of the broader tradition of collaboration between NHRF and CHS Greece, which includes several joint events.
The conference focuses on scientific and humanistic issues surrounding mastery, apprenticeship, and the practice of know-how in the Eastern Mediterranean during the medieval era. Its goal is to contextualize how professions and skills were chosen, driven by societal needs, personal preferences, financial or social incentives, professional competition, and even non-applied knowledge. Participants are drawn from a diverse range of fields, such as literature, science, art, architecture, and manufacturing.
Renowned professors and scholars from Greece and international universities, including a member of the CHS fellows community whose participation is funded by CHS Greece, will contribute, ensuring a truly interdisciplinary and global dialogue. Concluding remarks are expected to move beyond typical economic or functional debates about medieval instruction, instead illuminating the continual tendency for individuals to adapt to the working and learning conditions influenced by their immediate environment and the needs of the time.
