Overview

CHS offers one fellowship to a postdoctoral researcher to conduct original research on topics related to AI Ethics. This fellowship focuses on examining the ethical, societal, and philosophical implications of artificial intelligence as it continues to evolve and integrate into various aspects of everyday life. The aim is to develop comprehensive frameworks for the development, deployment, and use of AI that align with collective values and ethics, while also facilitating democratic deliberation and decision-making on a large scale. We encourage submissions from any discipline, including philosophy, sociology, law, public policy, ethics. We also invite contributions from computer science, provided they are interdisciplinary and engage with philosophical and ethical dimensions.

The duration of the fellowship is 12 months (July - June), during which the fellow completes a research project of their own choice. Throughout the appointment, the fellow is invited to participate in various CHS activities, sharing their findings and collaborating with other fellows and members of the CHS community.

This fellowship underscores CHS’s commitment to collaborating with authorities and organizations in Greece and supporting AI Ethics related initiatives in the country and abroad, aiming to strengthen international efforts to develop a common understanding and discussion on relevant issues, as well as highlight the central role that Greece can play in this timely and significant field of research and study.

Provisions for the fellow

The fellowship award includes:

  • A year-long appointment as CHS Fellow in AI Ethics, beginning on July 1st, 2026.
  • Year-long access to Harvard University's online databases and resources and its Scan and Deliver services.
  • Invitation for a ten-day-long educational trip to the US.
  • Invitation to pre-publish the outcomes of their research in CHS e-Journals and presentation of their profile and research project on CHS websites, social and other media.
  • Participation in events and activities to present their research, such as in the Lyceum Project conference on AI Ethics in Athens, and engage with the CHS academic community in Greece.
  • A stipend of $12,000. Additionally, CHS will cover travel expenses (airfare, accommodations) in the case that the fellow is invited by the Center to participate in events taking place in Greece or the US. The CHS does not offer separate grants for participation in conferences, purchase of books and electronic equipment, accommodations, family-related expenses, dining and entertainment expenses, etc., nor does the CHS pay per diems.
  • Academic support and advising during the fellowship appointment by the members of the academic committee.

Eligibility

Prerequisites for the fellowship are:

  • A PhD degree (or its equivalent). Applicants must have defended their degree before December 1st, 2025.
  • The fellow must be fluent in English and preferably possess some knowledge of modern Greek. It would be preferable for the fellow to be based in Greece.

Applicants may not apply to other CHS fellowship programs during the same application cycle.

Criteria

The CHS will only fund a proposal that:

  • Outlines clearly and in detail how a fellowship through the CHS will enable the proposed research and lead to its completion;
  • Shows how the outcomes of the project will both add to existing knowledge and promote further inquiry and engagement in the fellow’s immediate field and the humanities, social sciences, and other scientific fields in general;
  • Demonstrates the capability of the researcher to achieve the proposed outcomes: for example, through academic achievement, prior publications and educational programs, and letters of support.

Applications from postdoctoral researchers in the early steps of their academic career or in non-tenure-track positions will be prioritized.

Application information

The deadline for submitting applications is Friday, February 6, 2026, at midnight (Eastern European Time).
