In March 2023, CHS Greece welcomed for the first time the Harvard students currently enrolled in the Department of the Classics’ spring semester course titled "Regional Study: Macedonia." This course explores the political and cultural history of Macedonia and northern Greece, from the archaic period to late antiquity, and is taught by Emma Dench, McLean Professor of Ancient and Modern History and of the Classics & Dean of the Graduate School of Arts and Sciences, and Paul Kosmin, Philip J. King Professor of Ancient History.

The two professors, along with their graduates and undergraduate students, visited in spring break (March 11-18) a plethora of sites and museums in Macedonia and Epirus, focusing on questions of change, recurrence, and continuity within the long history of this region. During this travel-study program, each student was tasked with doing a live presentation of a specific site and artifacts for their traveling companions. These in situ explorations and exchanges are wonderfully illustrated in the photos shared through the Center's social media accounts. In addition, the 2023 cohort was accompanied in Greece by Teresa Wu, Department Administrator, and Evan Katsarelis, CHS Greece Programs and Events Manager, who coordinated the successful inaugural implementation of the program.

The Spring Break Trip to Macedonia by Harvard’s Department of the Classics and our Center was initially scheduled for March 2020, but due to the pandemic, it was suspended. CHS Greece extends its thanks to all participants and its delight with any chance of welcoming them back in future CHS activities in Greece. Our Center is also grateful to the professors and staff of the Department for the excellent collaboration. We look forward to future iterations of the travel-study program in Macedonia.
