Overview

This program provides a unique opportunity to gain archaeological fieldwork skills on the island of Kythera in Greece through first-hand experience in aspects such as excavation, post-excavation processing and recording, object photography, Geographic Information System (GIS), archival research, and public engagement. Two Harvard interns will be selected for this project and will work in collaboration with students from the University of Sydney. Students will reside in shared accommodation in the village of Potamos, on the island of Kythera. About the project

The hilltop site of Vythoulas, on the Greek island of Kythera, off the southern coast of the Peloponnese, is the island's only site with an occupation history that extends from the late Neolithic to the modern day. It has a particularly rich material and environmental history from the Minoan to the Venetian periods. The Fieldwork Project "EVOKE" (Exploring Vythoulas Origins in Kythera Environs) seeks to understand the site's migration history from antiquity to today and to assess the impact of such movement on the settlement's history and landscape. We aim to use this knowledge to inform sustainable development and enhance diasporic connections. Led by the University of Sydney, the project's senior research team is international, with experts from Australia, Brazil, France, Greece, the United Kingdom, and the United States. The project permit is under the auspices of the Australian Archaeological Institute at Athens. 2026 is the inaugural year of this new program. Its implementation is contingent upon final admissions and finalized program details, which will be confirmed in early April.
