Synopsis
On February 6, Giannis Perperidis will give a presentation on "Opening Technology / Democratizing Society: The Ethical Imperative in the Age of AI." Giannis is a Philosophy Scholar, a Postdoctoral Researcher at the Department of History and Digital Humanities, Ionian University, and a Fellow in AI Ethics 2025-26. The project presented is situated within a broader research on openness, technology and Artificial Intelligence, focusing not on finalized results but on the evolving theoretical framework for a philosophy of technology (especially AI) developed so far. AI is approached not as an isolated phenomenon, but as one technology among many, embedded in the dynamic relationship between society (Ontology-Politics) and technology (technics) within the field of philosophy of technology. Drawing on concepts such as the open society, the commons and the democratization of technology, and engaging thinkers like Popper, Castoriadis, and Feenberg, the talk seeks to articulate a political ontology of technology. It argues that ethical and normative questions surrounding AI cannot be adequately addressed through policy alone, but require deeper engagement with how technologies are designed and how they shape social relations. A more open, transparent, and participatory society, materially expressed through technologies and infrastructures, is presented as a foundation for more democratic and ethically sustainable forms of technological development.
