## About the workshop

### Overview

As part of the annual workshop series 2022-2023, the Center for Hellenic Studies in Greece offers the workshop "Voyage to Space. The Spring Sky."

In this workshop the coordinator and the participants will go on a voyage through the solar system and beyond, to the stars and distant celestial objects. Starting with our nearest star, the Sun, the coordinator will review basic solar physics, describe how the Sun affects the Earth, how solar storms are caused, what Space Weather is, and how auroras are caused. The effects of Space Weather on satellites and technological systems in near space and on the ground will be discussed. Continuing the voyage to our solar system, the coordinator will discuss the most important missions that man has sent into space and the missions of the future.

Then, one evening under the dark sky of Nafplio, the coordinator and the group will identify the brightest stars and connect the constellations of the night sky with Greek mythology. In addition, she will touch on the basics of stellar evolution, describing how stars are formed, what red giants, white dwarfs, neutron stars and black holes are.

The coordinator will also describe the famous Antikythera Mechanism in order to mention important information on observational astronomy that it contained and will look for the functions that this instrument performed. Finally, she will link Astronomy with Music through the "Sound of Space" and the "Music of the Spheres," looking for the relationship between science and art.

## Thematic areas – Workshop structure

The approach to the workshop’s topic will be structured around the following thematic axes:

### Day One

- The Sun, our nearest star
- Magnetic Storms and Space Weather
- Our Nearby weather and weather patterns
- Solar System
- The Sound of Space

### Day Two

- Constellations and Mythology
- Elements of Stellar Evolution
- From the Geocentric to the Heliocentric System
- The Antikythera Mechanism
- Uranography - Identification of Constellations

During the workshop meetings, the academic coordinator will introduce the above topics, and participants are invited to contribute to the group's discussions and case studies actively. In addition, ten days before the workshop, participants will receive relevant material that they can optionally study in advance.
