On June 28, 2008 at 6.30 p.m., the Center officially opened its doors to the world. The ceremony commenced with the rite of blessing by the local bishop, and after that, the cutting of a ribbon on the outside of the building and two ribbons on the plexi-glass plaques marking the Mazarakis and Vernardakis Rooms respectively. The bronze plaque outside, decorated with a blue-and-white ribbon, bore the official logo of the CHS; the Harvard Trademark Office approved use of the logo only a few weeks earlier.

After addresses by the Mayor of Nafplio, Mr. Panagiotis Anagnostaras, and the Deputy Minister of Education, Mr. Spyros Taliadouros, Ioannis Petropoulos, the Director of CHS Greece, gave a short inauguration speech to a large crowd in Philhellene Square. Around twenty interns participated in helping with the event logistics. The audience faced the Iatrou building, and included local and national government officials, such as the Mayor of Nafplio, three Members of Parliament from the region, and the Deputy Minister of Education. Greek and foreign diplomats, including the US Ambassador to Greece, Daniel Speckhard, and the Ambassador of France to Greece, Christophe Farnaud, were also present. Following the event, there was a reception open to all attendees in the Fellows Room. Captain Nikos Mazarakis and his wife later hosted a dinner for a smaller group of guests.
