Research topic during fellowship: Athletics in the Era of Peloponnesian War.
Despoina Dretaki studied Greek Philology at the University of Ioannina, and in 1995 she completed her undergraduate studies and received her BA in Classical Studies. Subsequently, she was involved in private education and in 2008 she was appointed as a permanent teacher in Secondary Education (1st General Lyceum of Ierapetra in Crete). In 2012 she decided to continue her studies at the University of Crete, and in 2016 she completed her postgraduate studies and received her MA in Classical Studies (thesis: "Guilt and Catharsis in Oedipus Tyrannus of Sophocles and Seneca's Oedipus"). Since 2018 she continues her studies at the University of Crete, and she is PhD Candidate in Classics under the supervision of Professor Lucia Athanassaki, University of Crete. Her forthcoming thesis, entitled "Peace in Euripides Drama", deals with the concept of peace and war in Euripidean drama and the way the tragic poet converses with contemporary history. Apart from Euripidean drama and tragedy in general (both Greek and Roman), her scholarly interests include Aristophanes’ comedies and the History of the Peloponnesian War as written by Thucydides.
