    Comparative Cultural Studies Program (CCSP) Alumni reunion

    Thirty-three Harvard students from programs since 2013 attended the event. Gregory Nagy and Nicolas Prevelakis welcomed the students; Harvard faculty and staff (Mark Schiefsky, Adrian Staehli, Cathy Coleman, Teresa Wu, and Daphne Maramaldi) also attended the reunion. Marina Cheilitsi (Coordinator of the Program) was also present and assisted in preparing the event. The reunion helped to strengthen the CHS’s ties with alumni, by whose word of mouth news of CHS programs reaches many prospective applicants.

    The sessions were designed and implemented by the program’s director Nicolas Prevelakis (Lecturer in Harvard's Committee on Degrees in Social Studies and Associate Director of Curricular Development, CHS DC) with imput from Kevin Caffrey (Lecturer in Harvard's Committee on Degrees in Social Studies), who taught all of the first week’s sessions.     “Evening of poetry”, Poets in Residence Program

    During the “Evening of poetry”, co-organized by the CHS and the Fougaro Cultural Complex and held under the auspices of the Municipality of Nafplio, the British poets and poets from the Argolid read their works to a rapt audience. (The English poems were translated into flowing Greek by Anna Stavrakopoulou and read by local actors and poets. I. Petropoulos chaired the panels.)     4th International Scientific Symposium on “Sports, Society and Culture”

    The program included interactive presentations as well as student workshops. CHS GR was instrumental to the organization of the event, which again proved a success. Christina Lafi, CHS GR Content Editor and Programs Assistant, along with Christos Giannopoulos, supported every stage of the symposium’s organization. The subject was “Exploring Excellence”.

    CHS Summer Internship Program in Greece

    Lectures and activities related to the interns’ field of study were introduced; interns met with Kenny Morrell, Nicolas Prevelakis, Katerina Flaka (head of EURES in Greece) and all supervisors. CHS GR’s new collaborations with academic departments from throughout Greece link the interns’ field of study more closely with the internships.

    Art of Prose Workshop

    CHS in Greece in collaboration with the Municipality of Nafplio and the Municipality’s Cultural Organization (DOPPAT), launched in 2015 a creative writing workshop. The workshop was coordinated by Stratis Haviaras and Marty Lambrou. Haviaras was an author and teacher, the former curator of the Woodberry Poetry Room and founder of the quarterly Erato (which subsequently became The Harvard Book Review and still later The Harvard Review). Lambrou is a novelist.

    Administered by the Newton, Massachusetts Public Schools in cooperation with Brandeis University, “The Examined Life: Greek Studies in the Schools” professional program encourages US teachers and administrators, K-12, to apply for Greek Study Fellowships. The program is aimed at strengthening Greek studies in schools. Program leaders and thirty-three fellows visited Greece in April and CHS on April 22, 2015.     Workshop on current developments in obesity and diabetes, Harvard Medical School, Academy of Athens, CHS

    CHS hosted a two-day scientific workshop on current developments in obesity and diabetes. The workshop was organized by Christos Mantzoros, a native of Nafplio and Professor of Endocrinology, Diabetes and Metabolism at Harvard Medical School. The event was held in collaboration with the Biomedical Research Foundation of the Academy of Athens and the CHS.     4th Panhellenic Philosophical Competition

    University of Patras, Greece

    The 4th Panhellenic Philosophical Competition was organized by the Department of Philosophy, University of Patras, the Greek Philosophical Society, and the CHS with the support of the Panhellenic Association of Philologists. The topic of this year’s competition was “Philosophy and Art”. 556 students from 82 schools and 22 prefectures participated. The final round was held at the University of Patras in March, and as in the past, Christos Giannopoulos awarded book prizes to the winners.

    Harvard Alumni Association annual spring-break trip to Greece

    For a seventh year the Center supported this important HAA initiative, which featured a number of special events in Nafplio, including a reception at the CHS. Gregory Nagy led the group of undergraduate and postgraduate students and alumni on the tour. Huntington Lambert, Dean of Continuing Education, participated in the trip and visited the Center, where he discussed study abroad programs in Greece.

    This intensive program, the oldest continuously running “Harvard Summer School” abroad, brought twenty-five undergraduates to Greece (19 of them studying at Harvard), for the fourteenth session of annual seminars and site visits.
